I can't thank you enough!
I haven't even finished setting the database up but I can tell
it will be a SNAP!
Last month I paid $250.00 to have a simple database search
set up. AND IT BOMBED! It wouldn't do what I needed it to!
I had to pay an additional $200.00 for a Programmer to update
THEIR product! And it STILL doesn't work correctly!
I Have at least 15 to 20 sites that will be using this! Hope
it helps you pay for a few extra's.

I think Flatetxt is great. I had tried other shareware/freeware scripts and although I have the ability to tinker I
never did due to lack of time.

I just love the way that I can tinker to my hearts content simply by visiting a website. The money spent was well
worth it as far as i am concerned.

When I first looked for a script like this everything I found was in the $1000's of dollars. The ones that did the vicinity style searches cost up to $5000. I figured I'd have to really jump through hoops to get something like this working. Now I have it up and running in ten minutes.

The code is well documented, easy to read, and easy to customize for special needs.

FLATTEXT is a Great perl script - absolutely beautiful to install worked on the first try - just one thing of interest noted - tried to use SSI on my template.html and it didn't work...
I read the part about not using SSI where
the data.txt and db.cgi script reside and
understand that but can't figure out why

We found Thomas' scripts to a great help in developing our site. We had Thomas combine the zip code locator with a flattext script so that users could narrow down their search further and if the user did not enter a zipcode it just found all off the matches in the database. With the way that he has the script compartmentalized and labeled makes it very easy to follow and alter.

I used this script as a foundation for a user database and then expanded it's features. The flattext script saved me the hassle of writing all the basic actions so I could concentrate on more important details. Like getting the database off of a POS NT server. My script is searching huge databases. I had
to modify the script to accomplish the desired
tasks. A very subtle error showed up after
a few months of use. I emailed Thomas with
a description of the error. It turns out it
was related to my mods. He found the error
and a solution and called me the same day!

Flattext.com dbase system has helped us making lots of money after becoming our main selling tool. However, there are three suggestions for the new Version 6:

1) Image Upload - The uploaded image is not deleted when a record is deleted. As such, we have to delete the image manually using FTP after we have deleted a record with an uploaded image.

2) After deleting a record, it leaves behind an empty line in the data file. Once imported into MS-Excel, you will get an empty row. For large database, it would be troublesome to delete the empty rows manually.

3) Can flattext.com come out with a separate script which automatically (using crontab maybe) deletes records in the data file with entry date more than X days? This is useful if you want to keep the records in the system for a maximum of X days only.

time! The developer fee I paid is minimal in comparison to the hundreds of
hours I have saved with your service! Even if you increased the developer
fee 3 times the normal rate, I would STILL use your service. Before using your
service, I knew absolutely nothing about PERL or programming a CGI script.
After installing my first script, I realized I needed to change the output
portion of the script, so I purchased a PERL reference manual. In less than
5 months, I have gone from knowing nothing about scripting to becoming an
intermediate PERL programmer. Finally, I have also learned how to
coordinate your scripts with SHTML to display an unlimited number of
different databases on a single web page at the same time.

I love the script but have run into a problem. I want the values to be displayed randomly. For example, if there are 50 store in Chicago, and I only allow the program to display 5, I want it to pull five random ones from the file. Does anyone know how to do this?

well it looks nice but it is NOT a dbms. the script is very static and self contained.... the price is ok... perhaps mysql will give it a little more utility. your script does fast search and display but that's all.
